Going to the movies is a popular activity in Dubai and the city boasts a good selection of multiplex cinemas showing English language films. The main cinema groups are Novo Cinemas (formerly Grand Cinemas), Reel Cinemas, and VOX Cinemas (formerly CineStar).
Films showing scenes of nudity, sex, homosexuality, anti-Islamic content etc. will have the relevant content cut out or may be even banned by the censor.
Novo Cinemas (until early 2014 known as Grand Cinemas) operate at the following locations in Dubai:
- Ibn Battuta Mall – 20 screens + 1 IMAX screen
- Cineplex – 12 screens – located next to the Grand Hyatt
- Al Ghurair Centre – 8 screens
- Dubai Festival City Mall – 12 screens
- Galleria Shopping Mall – 2 screens – specialises in Tamil and Malayalam films
The group is also set to open a new cinema at the Dragon Mart shopping complex in International City.

The Reel Cinemas at the Dubai Mall opened in August 2009. With 22 screens it is the largest cinema in Dubai.

Construction work on a new 14-screen cinema at the BurJuman shopping mall began in January 2013. It is scheduled to open in 2015. A 15-screen cinema at the Palm Mall on the Palm Jumeirah is expected to open in 2017.
Cinemacity currently have one cinema in Dubai. It is situated at the Arabian Center in Al Mizhar.
Located at the Lamcy Plaza shopping mall the Lamcy Cinema is a 2-screen theatre showing Hindi and Bollywood movies.
