International newspapers and magazines can be found in bookshops, supermarkets and hotels.

Local

English-language newspapers include:

  • 7 Days – free, tabloid-sized English language newspaper
  • The Khaleej Times – first English newspaper in the UAE – launched 1978
  • XPRESS – free weekly newspaper
  • Gulf News

English language local radio stations include:

Television - Cable & Satellite TV

There are a handful of free local TV channels in Dubai but most people plump for one of the packages offered by a satellite provider such as Orbit Showtime. Cable TV services are also offered by E-Vision (part of Etisalat) and du.

Thank goodness open media like the media such as BBC and ITN are finally allowed into the U.A.E.

BBC Good Food Middle East has recently launched providing a mix of UK & local content and brings the price down from Dhs 45 to Dhs 25.

From May 21 2007, British newspapers The Times and The Sunday Times will be printed and published in Dubai on the same day as the UK editions. The Times will cost Dhs 7 and the Sunday Times Dhs 15.

If you buy an international magazine here you may find that the censors have read it before you and images deemed offensive (naked ladies etc.) have been printed over.

Al Nisr Publishing are set to launch a new twice-weekly newspaper on March 15. It will be called Xpress. The company also publishes the Gulf News.

Virgin Radio have signed a preliminary agreement with the Arab Media Group to launch a radio station in Dubai.
