DJ receives 4 year jail sentence for possession of cannabis

February 20th, 2008

The severity of Dubai’s drug laws was highlighted yesterday when influential British DJ Grooverider was sentenced to 4 years imprisonment for possession of cannabis. Grooverider, the stage name of Raymond Bingham, is widely recognised as one of the founders of the drum and bass movement.

Grooverider was arrested at Dubai International Airport in Novemeber as he flew into to perform at The Lodge nightclub. He had forgotten to remove a joint containing 2.16 grams of cannabis from his trousers.

Earlier this month another British visitor, Keith Brown, was jailed for 4 years after 0.003 g of cannabis was found stuck to the bottom of his shoe. The piece of cannabis was so small that it could not been seen with the naked eye.

    Hi there,
Can you help me Im looking for Raymond Bingham a famous dj?. I believe he has sustained a four year jail sentance for possession of 2.16grams of vegetable matter classification C in England with a sentance of a written caution and forfeiture of any such substance. Heroin a class A substance carries a 4 year jail sentance here for approximately 10grams of the poison.
Im worried, I thought canabis was safe it was when I was 11 years of age. Now used recreationaly and not a criminal act anymore. Yet your law is so strict 0.003grams of canabis carries the same sentance as heroin in quite a large amount.
What can we offer to allow these men to be extradited to England and charged by their own law as any member of the Global Comunities would want.
I don’t smoke it anymore I gave it up to prove it wasn’t addictive, proved true no side effects either.
We live in a digital age were life is good and if it is not I would like to know why. Sentanced on the 23/11/07, please forgive me if Im wrong, the same time I was in hospital for a mental illness. I was treated with medicines and later released. Every patient in there had or did have an awareness to the vegitable matter, however personal problems damage your life more than the substance.
Times have changed as we have evolved into a digital evolution. Wifi routers are more dangerous than the substance known as canabis. I would like to know if there is time for change in this new age as we in England have relaxed laws to make foreign people feel more relaxed in an environment that doesn’t make you a criminal.
I have been on a number of government projects as I have grown up. The olimpic bid at highschool, the planning of the broadband network, even down to the very design of both adsl and cable modems even though I smoked canabis, never forgeting anyone.
In 1999 I worked for a global company called Bicc they taught me my skills as a tradesman, they make cables. Not important really except when the weekend came at the end of the month when payday arrived. Allowing me to venture out to the build up of the millenium party, dj Grooverider in the jungle room at our biggest legal event in the northern hemisphere. Not that I like jungle music I prefered dj Sharky to the point sweat was dripping from the roof.
I had an arena full of people dancing in sync using the same dancing techniques as me. Even the jungle room joined in swopping rooms smashing the crossfader. I enjoyed it. Even then 1/2 of an ounce could land you 12 month’s in prison. This is now a thing of the past with the new laws we are allowed to smoke although I choose not to, I have a preference towards drinking alcohol these days.
I understand your laws are strict but please could you find it in your society and Religion to be more course to different life styles and bad taste in music Im not suprised you locked him up lolol.
Joking apart please consider extradition as Teran did with the 15 sailors that were taken under international treaty last year in the early summer. All that took was an e-mail something we didn’t have to share when I was a child with a vision.
If you would like more correspondance please feel free to contact me.
    Yours sincerely Emilio Carta.
