Parking charges at the Mall of the Emirates and Deira City Centre
July 22nd, 2009Parking charges will be introduced at the Mall of the Emirates and the Deira City Centre when the Dubai Metro opens later this year.
Charging will begin on September 10 and will only apply to cars parking for more than 3 hours (4 hours at weekends). Those watching movies at the CineStar cinemas will receive free parking for an additional hour.
The move is designed to prevent drivers parking their vehicles for free at the malls and catching the Metro to another destination.
The malls’ owners, the Majid Al Futtaim Group, say the change will not affect the vast majority of shoppers.

It takes about 2 minutes to par your car and get to your 1st shop. I dropped off my laundry, sorted out a problem at Minutes, looked for and found a book at Borders, spent not long at the souk shop al jaber buying a present as always, did some shopping at Carrefour (only weekly shop, not monthly).I found I had 10 minutes left before my 3 hours were up! No cup of coffee, no lunch, no chat with a friend!
I will vote with my feet and so will most people.
If the metro parking is a problem, RTA should solve that, not Deira City Centre, which is the place I shop.
I will move my patronage and so will everyone else.
Be warned.
The time of the “little man” and “round the corner shopkeeper” is back. You have sounded the final death knell of the Malls in Dubai. As if they don’t have enough to contend with, with the economic downturn, lack of tourists etc.
What are the OWNERS thinking??
You can’t just keep on milking the beast
