Nakheel to cut workforce

The Independent, a UK-based newspaper, reports today that Dubai’s Nakheel is about to slash 500 jobs.

The paper quotes the company response as, ‘Nakheel continues to evaluate its projects and commitments against market conditions and opportunities. In doing so, the company also evaluates its cost base and efficiencies.’

Nakheel Properties is a state-owned property developer. Major construction projects include the Palm Jumeirah, Palm Deira, Palm Jebel Ali, The World, Jumeirah Islands, Ibn Battuta Mall, Discovery Gardens, International City, and Al Furjan.

New bakery opening at Jumeirah Lake Towers

The House of Cakes Bakery is opening new branch in Jumeirah Lake Towers.

The House of Cakes Bakery is to open a new shop in Jumeirah Lakes Tower, Al Seef Tower 2, in October 2009.

The first outlet opened 3 years ago in International City.

Unlike the first outlet, the new bakery will offer seating for around 40 people and will serve freshly made cakes, cupcakes, cookies, sandwiches and salads.

Owner Irena Dimitrova said ‘It is just something that I have always wanted to do. We have baked and decorated our special cakes in smaller bakery till now where we didn’t have the chance to seat and serve visitors. This will now change and we welcome all our clients to come and try our delicious cakes, cupcakes and cookies in our new shop.’

The bakery will also offer party packages for those who need a venue to celebrate special occasions.

Irena said what will make her shop special is that everything is made from scratch. Nothing is frozen or made from mixes.

She added ‘There are few places in Dubai where you can get that. I think it makes a huge difference in the way it tastes.’

Nakheel puts mall plans on hold

Nakheel has announced that its massive mall expansion programme, announced last year, has been delayed by 12 months due to the current economic downturn.

In April 2008 the Dubai-based property developer unveiled plans that would make it the largest shopping mall developer and owner in the Middle East by 2012, and one of the largest in the world by 2018.

5 mega mall projects were announced, offering a total retail space of 13 million square feet:

• Palm Mall – Palm Jumeirah
• Palm Mall – Palm Deira
• Ibn Battuta Mall Phase II – doubling the size of the Ibn Battuta Mall
• India Mart – International City
• Great Dubai Mall – International City

New development will offer affordable apartments

Property developers Nakheel have announced a new residential development at International City.

Forbidden City will comprise 4,000 affordable studio, one and two bedroom apartments, plus around 50 shops, cafes, and restaurants. The architecture will be inspired by that of Imperial China and the development will be located between the Central District and the Lake District.

Completion is expected in the first half of 2011.
