QE2 on the way to South Africa?

South African newspaper Business Day reports that Nakheel has applied for permission to open the QE2 as a floating hotel in Cape Town.

In 2007 Nakheel purchased the famous ocean liner from Cunard and planned to anchor it at the Palm Jumeirah. She arrived in Dubai at the end of 2008 and is currently moored at Port Rashid.

The QE2 is scheduled to arrive in Dubai later today. The world’s most famous cruise ship will be moored at Mina Rashid where she will be transformed into a luxury hotel to be anchored off the Palm Jumeirah.

She will be met on arrival in Dubai by a flotilla of boats including the MY Dubai, the luxury yacht of owned by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and the Royal Navy’s HMS Lancaster.

QE2 arriving next month

One of the world’s most celebrated cruise liners is currently making her final voyage. The Queen Elizabeth II (QE2) will arrive in Dubai on November 26 when she will be handed over to new owners Nakheel.

After arriving she will undergo an extensive refurbishment to recreate her original interior décor and fittings. She will then become a floating hotel, berthed at a pier on the Palm Jumeirah.

The 70,000 tonne vessel was launched by the Queen Elizabeth II in 1967 and has carried more than 40 million passengers and made more than 800 transatlantic crossings.

QE2 tickets sell out in just 36 minutes

Tickets for the final voyage of the QE2 sold out just 36 minutes after going on sale. Earlier this month the luxury cruise liner was purchased by government-owned investment company Istithmar for $100 million. In September 2008 the ship will sail from Southampton to Dubai, where it will be anchored at the Palm Jumeirah and transformed into a luxury hotel.

State-owned investment company Istithmar has purchased the QE2 ocean liner from Cunard for $100 million. The famous ship, launched by the Queen in 1967, will be transformed into a floating luxury hotel and museum, and anchored at the Palm Jumeirah from 2009. An extensive refurbishment programme will aim to recreate the ship’s original interior.
