Souks
Souk is the Arabic word for market and a visit to one is an essential part of the Dubai experience. Haggling is traditional in the souks and can result in massive reductions in prices. As a general guide, make a first offer of 50% of the quoted price. Once the shopkeeper has accepted your offer, you are expected to pay. Many of Dubai's souks are found in Deira.

I love the souks of Dubai.
If you're looking for a bargain you should also check out the Karama area. This is one of the poorer areas of Dubai where all the low income workers live. There are lots of stalls selling sunglasses (fake) etc. Be prepared to barter though!
Friday evening is possibly the worse time to go to the gold souk. It is extremely busy and finding a taxi that'll be willing to take you is extremely difficult.
On Fridays the souks open later at 4pm. They close at around 10pm.
