Geography

Dubai is situated on the Arabian Gulf, in the northwest of the United Arab Emirates. The city is the capital of the emirate of the same name and is sometimes referred to as Dubai City.

The Dubai emirate covers over 4,000 sq km and is growing due to land reclamation projects such as the Palm Jumeirah. The city itself covers just a fraction of this area.

The Dubai Creek, a natural inlet from the Gulf, divides the city in two. Deira lies to the north and borders the emirate of Sharjah. Bur Dubai lies to the south.

In recent years the city of Dubai has expanded rapidly south of Bur Dubai. The Dubai Marina, Palm Jumeirah, and Jebel Ali are just a few of the major developments here.

  5. The best advise for getting around town. Do not even think about driving east along Sheikh Zayed Road between 6pm and 8.30pn. One frantic traffic jam as people head back to Sharjah. On Thursday the rush hour starts at about 2.30pm.

  6. There’s a lot of building work going in Jumeirah. To avoid this and get a taste of the real Dubai, try staying in Bur Dubai or Deira.
