Going to the movies is a popular activity in Dubai and the city boasts a good selection of multiplex cinemas showing English language films. The main cinema groups are Novo Cinemas (formerly Grand Cinemas), Reel Cinemas, VOX Cinemas (formerly CineStar), and Roxy Cinemas.
Films showing scenes of nudity, sex, homosexuality, anti-Islamic content etc. will have the relevant content cut out or may be even banned by the censor.
Novo Cinemas (until early 2014 known as Grand Cinemas) operate at the following locations in Dubai:
- Ibn Battuta Mall – 20 screens + 1 IMAX screen
- Al Ghurair Centre – 8 screens
- Dubai Festival City Mall – 12 screens
- Dragon Mart – 12 screens
The Cineplex at the Grand Hyatt is now the VOX Cineplex.

Reel Cinemas at The Dubai Mall opened in August 2009. With 22 screens it is one of the largest cinemas in Dubai.
In 2010 Reel Cinemas began its expansion with the opening of the country’s first boutique ‘Premier’ class cinema at Dubai Marina Mall.
In 2014 and 2016 Reel Cinemas opened two new theatres at The Beach and CITY WALK. In January 2017 these were taken over by Roxy Cinemas.

VOX Cinemas (formerly CineStar)
VOX cinemas have theatres at the BurJuman (14-screen), Grand Hyatt (12-screen), City Centre Deira (11-screen), Mall of the Emirates (14-screen), City Centre Mirdif (10-screen), Mercato Mall (7-screen), and City Centre Al Shindagha (7-screen).

A cinema at BoxPark is due to open sometime in 2017.
Cinemacity currently have one cinema in Dubai. It is situated at the Arabian Center in Al Mizhar.
Located at the Lamcy Plaza shopping mall the Lamcy Cinema is a 2-screen theatre showing Hindi and Bollywood movies.
