Bastakia Quarter

The Bastakia Quarter in Bur Dubai is one of the city’s most picturesque heritage sites. It was built in the late 19th century by Persian merchants attracted to the city by its relaxed trade tariffs and takes it name from the town of Bastak in southern Iran.

The area has been declared a conservation area and its narrow alleys pedestrianised. Many of the restored buildings here feature wind towers, an early but effective form of air-conditioning. Some are private homes, but many are open to the public. These include:

  • Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding
  • Basta Art Café - Popular courtyard café.
  • Majlis Gallery - Features the work of local and international artists.
  • Ostra - Gallery specialising in contemporary art and sculpture.
  • XVA - Small guesthouse and art gallery.

I remember Bastakia when it was falling into disrepair. The restoration is great and imaginative.

The Majlis Gallery is a relaxing place to visit, so much different to the rest of Dubai which is very flashy. It holds exhibitions that change every couple of weeks, so you can visit more than once and not get bored. It also has a very lovely courtyard with trees.
