Jumeirah Garden City

Jumeirah Garden City is the proposed name of the redevelopment of the area behind the Sheikh Zayed Road/Trade Centre, between the World Trade Centre roundabout and Al Safa.

It involves demolition of existing housing in Al Wasl and Satwa Areas. Eviction notices were served to residents at the beginning of 2008.

The developer is the Meraas Investment Company. As at March 2008 no specific details about the development have been released.

Dubai is a joke and this project has been cancelled as of December 4, 2008, when state-owned Meraas suspended plans it had announced only two months previously for a 95 billion dollar city within a city called Jumeirah Gardens.

I'd like to start by pointing out that there are not 150k people currently living in Satwa. If you look at Wikipedia it shows that there are about 30k+, which is still a lot of people to move out of there homes, but exaggerating is not the way to prove a point. The other thing I'd like to point out is that the actual population that Jumeirah Gardens is aiming to hold is 50-60k which is slightly higher than the aforementioned 10k. They are not looking to make the area more exclusive, but to make it a more sustainable place that holds more people and attracts more visitors i.e. money for Dubai. Now, that said, I do feel very bad for the residents in Al Satwa concerning their compensation for their homes. I believe it should be much higher and it would be nice if they were given homes in the new complexes in exchange for their old ones. The project looks great. It's just unfortunate that the greed of the developers affects Al Satwa residents the way it has and will.

I also strongly believe that the Government should find an alternative before before they ask the residents to move out of their houses!!!

Dubai continues to destroy itself in order to pander to wealthy Europeans. IF you are not super wealthy, this city does not care for you.

Dubai has become a place to live for ultra rich and its administrators have forgot the human values, the just want the Rich people to stay in here, and there is no place for the poor’s or middle class in here, but before undertaking such a huge project the Admin or rater the rulers should have considered to develop infrastructure to move those living in such areas there. No-one is against Modernization but there should be adequate facilities, the government want to keep the laborers out from the city and they are treated as slaves rather like animals, don’t you think that these are the people who has given blood and sweat to Dubai, request the Govt. to the change the attitude as these are the people who are responsible for the growth of Dubai,

How far dubai will go? Demolishing lively places such as Satwa. We local people have no peace of mind anymore. Taking our lands and home with a minimal unrealistic compensation. Dubai is throwing its own people out to attract foreigners.

It's really messed up, force around one fifty thousand people from their homes, more from their jobs, livelihoods, neighbours, friends, the place they grew up in, their social network and support and give them nothing, no affordable accommodation, no alternative options and just leave them to fend for themselves. All so that we can have another semi-gated neighbourhood where around 10,000 people live instead of the 150 thousand that lived before. Surely there is enough underutilised land in Dubai to build this "Garden City" in instead of breaking down Satwa - an important part of Dubai, it's history and culture and then labelling it as "Jumeirah".
They stopped construction on a beach in Jumeirah because the residents there complained, but who cares about a hundred thousand or so people, demolish their homes and throw them out, they'll manage somehow. Dubai has lost it's heart, it's nothing but a facade of glass buildings without a soul.

I'm sorry to hear that this area is going to be demolished, but I guess that the buildings here have a certain life span, and this maybe better for those people living there as it might be dangerous for them to live in such a place.

I hope that they will help people to find a new house which is affordable and convenient, or help them relocate.
